Read Ali's story below:

Ali was diagnosed with SMA (Spinal Muscular Atrophy) Type 1 in utero. After she was born, we were sent home from the hospital on hospice with no treatment available and little hope for her to live past 2 years old.  We found hope in clinical trials that were being offered in Chicago and that changed the trajectory of disease for Ali.  When we started the trials Ali almost lost all of her muscle function, except being able to move her hands around a little bit.  She was very weak. At 6 months old she couldn't sit up, roll over or crawl.  She then lost the ability to swallow safely by mouth. The hardest thing for me was taking away her bottle. Little by little she started improving and we started to see her hands come up more and her feet go up, and her touching her feet with her hands. We knew she was a miracle in the works.  Right now Ali is 3 years old and she has come a long way!  She can roll over, sit up, hold a pen or a marker, draw or paint.  She uses a manual wheelchair to get around and just started preschool last week! Her future is very uncertain, the medication she's on is very new and hasn't been studied for very long. We don't know if she'll be able to walk on her own or eat orally again.  What we do know is that she will require physical therapy probably for the rest of her life.  She will also need speech therapy to continue improving her swallowing muscles.  She will need a new wheelchair in the future, improvements to our living situation so we can have accessible housing and much more. She has had a number of hospital stays in her short life due to various respiratory infections. Those are the hardest for all of us to get through.  Ali's limitations, we try to focus on what she can do and give her as many normal experiences as time and resources allow.  Ali is only three years old, but has a long, unknown road ahead of her full of doctor appointments, therapy sessions, procedures and possible surgeries.  She is our very happy, energetic and sociable three year old girl and we love supporting her in any way we can!  We hope that you can support her too in her fight!  #Alistrong
