Sullivan "Sully" was born May 7, 2014 at just 4lbs 4oz. He was diagnosed in utero at 19 weeks with a Congenital Heart Defect called Tetralogy of Fallot. Sully underwent his first heart procedure at just a day old. As the procedure was unsuccessful due to his small size, Sully remained in the hospital to recover, and more importantly, to grow. He then underwent his first open heart surgery at 7 weeks old to place a BT Shunt, which helped increase pulmonary blood flow until he was ready for his full-repair of TOF. After nearly 3 months in the hospital, Sully was able to go home! At 11 months, Sully had his next open heart surgery which was the full-repair.
Although there hasn't been a heart surgery for Sully since 2015, we have encountered additional surgeries, MRIs, and a diagnosis of growth hormone deficiency during that time. Sully is also injected each night with a hormone to help him grow, however we are happy to report that at his 4-year appointment, for the first time, he has finally made it on the growth chart (insert happy dance here). This is validation that the tears, trials and triumphs throughout Sully's journey are worth it. Additionally, we are thankful, and blessed that for the last 3 years, his fancy heart has not stopped him from doing what he loves, and that is simply being a kid. From karate to soccer, gymnastics and onto his current favorite, baseball, his strength, resilience and true joy for life continues to inspire us each and every day.
Now, in just a short week (5/31), Sully will have yet another open heart surgery, this time a full valve replacement. Although we've been down this path before, it's never easy. We've continued to advocate and fundraise for other children and families affected by Congenital Heart Defects, most recently donating to the Herma Heart Institute at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin where Sully's next procedure will take place. With continued support and encouragement from our family and friends, we are blessed to have an opportunity to help support our own family at this time, by continuing to share Sully's journey, and how he truly inspires us all to be all heart.
